I was at the BBC Proms performance in 2023 when they played this. The silence in the Royal Albert Hall during the Kolomiiets was deafening. People were crying. This recording captures some of that electricity, but nothing compares to seeing these musicians pour their hearts out on stage. Essential listening.
(I listen to this album and think of my Ukrainian friends who had to flee Kyiv. This orchestra is their voice. Especially the Kolomiiets suite - this music hurts, but at the same time gives hope that the truth will survive.)
This album proves that classical music is not museum culture. It's alive, it's urgent, it's political. The Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra isn't just playing notes - they're fighting for their country's right to exist. Every album purchase is a small act of resistance. Buy it, listen to it, share it.
The sound quality on this recording is extraordinary. DG has captured the raw energy of the live performance without losing any clarity. In the Beethoven finale, you can hear every individual voice in the orchestra fighting to be heard - it's chaotic in the best possible way, like democracy in sound.
